SUPPORTING TEACHER EDUCATORS

Without teacher educators, not much would happen in relation to the new reforms relating to Initial Teacher Education in the Lifelong Learning sector (or any other sector). This page starts to draw together content specifically aimed at helping those who work to support trainees or experienced staff, either to get qualified, or with their CPD, you may be teaching on a PTLLS, CTLLS or DTLLS, a Cert Ed or PGCE, you may be a Subject Learning coach, a mentor or a CPD manager. As far as this section of the website is concerned, you are a 'teacher educator'.

Centres for Excellence in teacher Training (CETTs)

Centres of Excellence in Teacher Training (CETTs) are networks of partnerships of organisations involved in Initial Teacher Training (ITT) and continuing professional development (CPD) in the further education (FE) system. The rich variety of delivery organisations and those involved more indirectly as either stakeholders or through provision of specialist services is impressive. The wide range of organisations in the learning and skills sector is well reflected.

There are CETTS across the country as follows:

CETT Lead institution
CETT for Inclusive Learning Northumbria University
East of England CETT (EECETT) ACER
East Midlands CETT (EMCETT) South Leicestershire College
HUDCETT University of Huddersfield
LONCETT London Institute of Education
Peninsula CETT University of Plymouth
Success North Newcastle College
SUNCETT University of Sunderland
South West CETT (SWITCH) Learning South West
West Midlands CETT (WMCETT) University of Warwick
The Westminster Partnership CETT Oxford Brookes University

Dr Joe Harkin - Professionalising the workforce. The Quality Improvement Agency (QIA – now part of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service, LSIS) commissioned Dr Joe Harkin to conduct an analysis of the results of case studies of workforce development carried out by Centres of Excellence in Teacher Training (CETTs) and to write a preliminary report as a focus for a symposium held at the University of Warwick on 1 July 2008. This is the final report that sets out the results of the case studies and the symposium.

Every Child Matters originates from legislation to bring coherence to the thinking of education, health and welfare providers in supporting the development of children and young people. The very use of the term “child” in the title makes it seem as if ECM is not relevant to the post 16 sector. As a result it is likely that tutors and managers across the sector will be unfamiliar with the detail of its requirements. Indeed, much of the material produced to support schools does not use the language of the FE System. Furthermore, some issues included are not relevant post 16 and there are other matters that assume greater prominence or only become relevant for learners at, or after, the age of 16. EMCETT in conjunction with TLO has produced this material, called Every Learner Matters, to help all post 16 providers analyse how their existing provision meets the requirements of the ECM outcomes and to inform professional debate about any gaps in their provision. The same tools can also provide insights into how to fill any gaps and/or improve the quality of existing provision in a planned and achievable way. At http://www.emcett.com/every_learner/index.html

Offender Learning - This e-resource fulfils several functions.

  1. Teachers - who are considering, or expecting, to start teaching in a custodial environment will gain a thorough understanding of the context, processes and environment of offender education.
  2. Mentors - who work with a colleague who is teaching within a custodial environment will better understand the context in which the mentee is working.
  3. Trainee Teachers - will enrich their understanding of the wider Lifelong Learning Sector.
  4. Teacher Education Providers - can build this resource into their Diploma programme to support the Level 5 Unit of Assessment - Continuing Personal and Professional Development.

You can explore this resource by following the hyperlinks (below) in sequence or you can simply dip into those topics that are useful or have particular interest for you. At http://www.emcett.com/offender/index.html

Other resources for teacher educators

PROMOTING E-LEARNING is an online resource which is available as part of the Skills for :Life Quality Initiative. The materials are in two parts, firstly 'Introducing e-learning' and secondly ', 'e-learning for teacher educators', there are training manuals for each section, and many practical activities. An excellent resource which focusses on technology and skills for life, but is useful for e-learning staff development in other areas too. (with thanks to Sarah Chu)

THESE RESOURCES ARE PRACTICALLY BASED, AND INCLUDE MANY ACTIVITIES WHICH MOST TEACHERS COULD MAKE USE OF, AND ACTIVITIES TO HELP YOU IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS WITH TECHNOLOGY

Resources for Teacher Educators at the QIA - A list of resources with very limited real explanation of their benefit, worth or application. The ones I think are worth including are below:

Continuing Professional Development Modules These modular materials have been developed to support teacher trainers involved in delivering accredited training programmes for all staff teaching literacy, numeracy and language learners. The modules are arranged in small 'bite-size' chunks to suit busy teachers.

Gold Dust Resources The Gold Dust resources are designed to support the development of generic skills, knowledge and understanding of trainee teachers in the lifelong learning sector.

Learning for Living: CPD modules Creating Learning Materials  These modules offered at level 3 and level 4 are for experienced trainers. The training is about creating or adapting learning materials for those who work with adults with learning difficulties or disabilities. The trainer and participant packs can be downloaded from this website or ordered free.

The Media Library of Teaching Skills (MLOTS) of the USA Contains short videos of real teaching for professional development purposes

Training materials from the National Centre for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL) of the USA Includes guides, reports and materials on reading, student persistence, participation, multiple intelligences, performance accountability, and working in specific professional contexts

Training the Teacher Trainers These resources for training the teacher trainers have been developed to support professional development for teacher trainers involved in delivering accredited training programmes for teachers of literacy, numeracy and ESOL. The resources are available in two different modes; for face-to-face and online learning. Course developers can put together their own, shorter or longer, courses using these resources. They can mix elements from the face-to-face courses with elements from the online learning materials to make blended courses.

Talent This website hosts a moderated database of resources and activities designed to help teacher trainers develop programmes and share ideas for good practice.

Tools Library: Good Practice Guidelines for the Skills Check and Initial Assessment For literacy, language and numeracy teachers, subject support staff and adult learner supporters.

Tools Library: The Learning Journey This document is a simple guide to the various stages of the learning journey. It illustrates each of the stages, using the DfES definitions, and provides narrative explanation.
